In 2014, Rich ran the forensics sections of our Saturday Morning STEM program which attracted over 60 middle school students. The forensics program is a huge success and receives strong reviews from students. The success of this program is a direct result of Richard’s ability to work with the full-range of learners and to design experiences that are accessible to students from diverse backgrounds. I am most appreciative of Richard’s dedication to the teaching profession and his abilities to teach science in ways that give urban youth a positive experience with the image of science.

Rich Fox loves forensic science, and he loves to explain forensic science. I had the pleasure to work with him on an educational project for WBGH-TV where he was our science advisor. His interest and passion for the subject, combined with his innate charm and clarity of communication, allowed us to translate a complex topic into an accessible and engaging one for high school students. And when we were able to see him at work in his diverse classroom, we could also see that he had instilled that interest and passion in all of his students. Rich was also key in helping us present our work to teachers at the National Science Teachers Association across several sessions of their national conference. As a teacher himself he was well versed in how to align the project with national standards, how to fold in the curriculum and how to make it meaningful for teachers.

A couple colleagues and I took a group of our students from the Mary Lyon Pilot High School for some crime-busting and crime scene analysis with Fox. Our young female scientists had a great time learning techniques and putting together the pieces to solve a dramatic crime of passion! Thank you, Fox, for sharing your expertise in such an empowering and engaging way!

As an art teacher, I'm always looking for ways to show my students how art is integrated into everyday lives and how it can help pave the way for many career paths. After hearing about Dr. Fox through a colleague, I decided to reach out to Dr. Fox to see if there was a way he could design a program specifically targeting art and science together. The end result was more than I could have imagined! Dr. Fox customized a program to fit 3 fun and science filled mini lessons into just an hour! Students learned how artists are used in the forensics field for things such as reimagining what a person looked like through skeletons, learned how unique fingerprints were and how to identify their own, about acids and bases through secret messages, and about casting a negative to form a positive! we hope to have him back each year as part of out STEAM initiative in our school!
